Vimeo Downloader not working: error messages and fixes

Last updated

If the Vimeo Downloader online tool shows an error, find the exact message below. Most failures come down to the link, the video itself, your browser's storage or connection, or too many requests in a short time. The tool only works for public Vimeo videos, and it doesn't try to get around private, password-protected or paid ones.

The messages below are the ones the online tool shows as of October 7, 2026.

Check these first

  1. The link. Use the full link to the video itself, starting with https://, on vimeo.com, www.vimeo.com or player.vimeo.com. It has to contain the video's numeric ID, as in https://vimeo.com/123456789. A profile or channel page is not a video link.
  2. The video. Open the link in a private browsing window, where you are not logged in to Vimeo. The tool reads the video without logging in, so if Vimeo asks for a password or says the video is private there, the tool can't read it either.
  3. One link at a time. The tool reads only the first valid link in the field. Wait for the result card before you select Download, and keep the tab open until the file is finished.
MessageWhat it meansWhat to do
"Please enter a media link."The field is empty.Paste a Vimeo video link and submit again.
"This is not a valid URL."The tool couldn't find a usable link in what you pasted. It needs the full address, starting with http:// or https://.Copy the whole link from your browser's address bar and paste it again.
"This link platform is not supported."The link is not on vimeo.com, www.vimeo.com or player.vimeo.com. The tool only works with Vimeo.Use a link to a Vimeo video.
"This Vimeo video is private or cannot be parsed."The tool couldn't read a file it can save from that link. Typical reasons: the video is private, password-protected, paid or no longer available, the link doesn't point to a single video, or the video doesn't offer a file type the tool supports.Run the private-window check above. If Vimeo asks for access there, the tool doesn't support that video. If the video plays without logging in and the message stays, try again later.
"Too many requests. Please try again later."The tool limits how many requests it accepts in a short time. It can appear when you submit links, or select Download, several times in a row, and also when the tool is busy.Wait a little, then try once.
"Failed to parse this link."A general message for when the tool couldn't read the link and has no more specific reason, for example because the request failed.Check your connection and try once more.

Errors while downloading

MessageWhat it meansWhat to do
"Failed to download this file."The download couldn't be completed, for example because the temporary download link expired or Vimeo's server returned an error.Select Download again. The tool asks for a fresh link each time you start a download.
"Network connection interrupted. Click Continue to resume."Your connection dropped and the page's automatic retries didn't recover it.Select Continue. This works for videos delivered as a single MP4 file.
"Failed to download the video tracks."For a video delivered as separate video and audio streams, one stream couldn't be downloaded. The tool has already retried once.Check your connection and start the download again. Downloads that need merging can't be resumed.
"Failed to generate MP4."The tool downloaded the video and audio streams but couldn't combine them into one MP4.Try again. If it keeps failing for the same video, contact us with the link.
"This video exceeds the browser download size limit."The file is larger than the size the tool can download in the browser. The online tool can't download this file.
"This browser does not have enough reliable local storage for this file…"Before it starts, the tool checks how much storage your browser lets this site use. For a video that has to be merged, it needs room for the video stream, the audio stream and the finished MP4 at the same time, so it needs noticeably more than the final file size. The message also shows the file size and the storage that is available.Free up disk space and try again.
"This resource can only be downloaded with the browser extension. Install it to continue."The online tool doesn't download this file, for example because it is very large or Vimeo doesn't report its size. The online tool can't download this file.
"This download method is not supported yet. Please try again later."The tool received a delivery method it can't handle yet.Try again later.

What the buttons mean

  • Checking browser storage... The tool is checking that your browser has enough storage before it starts.
  • Downloading... with a percentage: the file is coming from Vimeo to your browser.
  • Preparing MP4... The video and audio streams are downloaded and the tool is merging them into one MP4 in your browser. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
  • Continue or Restart download: if you close the tab during a single-file MP4 download, the page may offer to continue or restart it when you come back. A download that needs merging can't be resumed, so start it again from the beginning.

Still stuck?

Contact us with the Vimeo link and the exact message you saw. Please don't send links to private or password-protected videos. The tool can't read them, and it doesn't help you get around Vimeo's access controls.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the tool say the video is private when I can watch it?

Being able to watch a video while you are logged in, or after typing a password, is not the same as the video being public. The tool reads the video without logging in, so it only sees what an anonymous visitor sees. It doesn't unlock or bypass Vimeo's access controls.

Does the tool work for every public Vimeo video?

No. It saves the highest quality Vimeo provides for a public video as an MP4, and some files can be turned away, for example when they are very large or their size is unknown, or when your browser doesn't have enough storage.

Where do I find the file after the download finishes?

Your browser saves the MP4 like any other download. It is named after the video's title, with .mp4 at the end. Check your browser's downloads list.

That depends on the owner's settings, Vimeo's Terms of Service and copyright law. Our legal guide walks through each of them.
